Melchizedek was an African High Priest that lived in what the bible identifies as Salem. Salem as many of you may know will later be called, Jerusalem. … Melchizedek was a Jebusite. Jebusites were Canaanites (descendants of Canaan the son of Ham). This African High Priest is very special for people of African descent.
Melchizedek is important and the city of Salem (Jebus) from which he ruled are vital facets of our history. He was a worshipper of the True and Living God. His service wasn’t just to any God, but specifically to, God Most High, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Since he was the God of creation, Melchizedek offered sacrifices and prayers to the one who is greater than all. (justiceinthemargins.org)
This “Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham as he was returning from defeating the kings and blessed him,” and to him Abraham apportioned “one-tenth of everything.” His name, in the first place, means “king of righteousness”; next, he is also king of Salem, that is, “king of peace.” Without father, without mother, without
genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life but resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of our local community. Since 1974 ECBCS has touched the lives of numerous individuals. Many of our students have earned degrees from partner institutions such as the Claremont School of Theology and Fuller Theological Seminary, while others have used classes for professional and personal growth. ECBCS also benefited from a long-standing collaborative relationship with the University of La Verne, which, over the years, supported a variety of courses and community outreach activities that impacted those we serve. An example of the ministry demonstrated by ECBCS was the April 2016 Social Impact Lecture held at Christ Our Redeemer Church. The lecture focused on Rev. Dr. King’s legacy and the church's role with guest speaker, Dr. Cornel West. Dr. West is a living illustration of the African-American prophetic oral tradition. The lecture was well received and symbolized ECBCS coming of age in its new location.
In addition to the graduate and undergraduate courses and programs, in 2023 we launched a pilot program called the Jr. Order of Melchizedek (JOM). The JOM program focuses on the transitional period from youth to young adulthood. JOM combines Biblical principles with traditional African social roles and values. The character traits of honesty, integrity, non-violence, and faith are used to prepare students for the careers of tomorrow.
ECBCS continues to impact the lives of its constituents through community programing. In February of 2026 we held the BLACK HISTORY MONTH TEACH-IN: The Genius of Nonviolence Protest: A Modern Case Study. The program, held at Primm A.M.E. Church in Pomona, CA, addressed many of the challenges being experienced today with strategies for Building the Beloved Community in this time of social unrest., you are supporting your community and helping to build a brighter future for all.
